The CrossFit stuff...
When did you first try CrossFit/what made you want to try it? I started CrossFit in 2016 at CrossFit Elevate. I had been doing traditional weight training since middle school and was finding it hard to stay motivated and work out, so I started looking for a change to my routine.
What was your first CrossFit workout? I don’t remember the specific workout… I do remember wringing the sweat out of my shorts afterwards though
What made you stick with CrossFit? CrossFit has really turned into a family affair for me. I am lucky enough to be able to bring my sons (Tyler and Connor) to the gym and spend quality time with them as I work out. The main reason I stick with it is to set a good example for them and to stay in shape so I can be active with them as they get older.
Favorite WOD: I really enjoy any of the EMOM workouts (*EMOM = Every Minute On the Minute)
Least favorite WOD: Anything involving running
Favorite movement: Before starting CrossFit I would say bench press, but since getting my form corrected with the help of the coaches at Elevate I have to say Squat Cleans.
Least favorite movement/something that’s hard for you: Pull-ups
What gets you through tough workouts? The answer I should have is because the hard workouts are making me stronger… but the reality is that it eliminates some of the guilt of my Sunday morning donut.
What keeps you motivated? Living a long, healthy life with my family is my biggest motivator. I know staying healthy will only get harder the older I get.
Proudest CrossFit moment to date? My proudest moment to date would be 12/9/16 where I squatted 405 lbs. This was special not only because it was the first time I had ever squatted that much, but also because when I got home I packed my wife up and took her to the hospital to deliver my second son.
Hobbies outside of CrossFit: I enjoy spending time with my family and bird hunting with my dog
Changes you’ve seen because of CrossFit: I feel healthier/stronger than ever; even more than when I was playing football in college.
How do you balance working out with family life? This is an easy one for me because I bring my family to the gym with me. The coaches and clients at CrossFit Elevate have been great to accommodate my sons and make them feel very welcome. Some days are tougher than others, but I cannot tell everyone how much I appreciate the help and support I get with having them there.
What’s your favorite part of bringing your kid(s) to the gym? My favorite part is that I am able to set a good example for my boys. I love having them there watching and motivating me. My older boy, Tyler (3 years old) will now mimic my movements and join in on box jumps, burpees and various bar movements using the PVC pipe.
Why CrossFit Elevate? I looked at a few different gyms prior to joining back in June of 2016…the facility, coaches, and clients are unlike any other in the area. I would recommend CrossFit Elevate to anyone, regardless of athletic background.
