Fitness Background: Some weightlifting, but nothing consistent.
Now onto the CrossFit stuff...
When did you first try CrossFit & what made you want to try it? My wife DeLynn started CrossFit probably 5 months before I gave it a try. She would come home talking about how hard the workouts were and how much she enjoyed it. After watching the CrossFit games with her, and saying numerous times that it didn’t look that hard, I decided to try it out.
What was your first CrossFit workout? Not sure what the workout was, but I am sure that I didn’t make it past the warm up before nearly dying.
What made you stick with CrossFit? The community. There is a lot to be said about the camaraderie that is formed when you get your butt kicked with the same people everyday.
Favorite WOD: Grace, DT, Fran
Least favorite WOD: Isabel (a 4min WOD that takes me about 12min)
Favorite movement: Any powerlifting movement
Least favorite movement/something that’s hard for you: Jumping lunges, overhead lunges, front rack lunges, reverse lunges, walking lunges, lunges with your shirt off, lunges with dumbbells…
What gets you through tough workouts? I have to break the workouts up in my head into smaller sets, and then I rest after completing a number of reps.
What keeps you motivated? Even though CrossFit isn’t a real sport, the competition part keeps me motivated. So, it’s almost like a real sport in that regard.
Proudest CrossFit moment to date? My first pull-up. As a 300-pounder, doing a pull-up takes a lot of effort.
Hobbies outside of CrossFit: Family, work, gym. Rinse and repeat.
Changes you’ve seen because of CrossFit: This may be surprising to those that know me, but my mobility is much improved.
How has CrossFit helped you outside of the gym: It puts my other goals in life in perspective. CrossFit is humbling, but if you stick with it you will notice the change. This mindset helps me quite a bit outside of the gym because it is a constant reminder to just keep working at your goals and they will happen.
How do you balance working out with family life? 5am is the only way I can do it. If I don’t go then, I won’t make it. I have been working out at 5am for so long now that I wake up at 4:20 every morning no matter what and I can’t go back to sleep… So, I just drag myself to the gym and keep my pre-workout on the nightstand.
Your kids come up to the gym sometimes with you and your wife - what’s your favorite part of bringing them to the gym with you? I like that they get to see a community of people working out and having fun. Growing up, working out wasn’t really a social event, but more of a must do. I want my kids to know that being healthy is the way they should live their lives, and it makes it easy when they associate the gym with fun.
Why CrossFit Elevate? The programming. I have been a member of other CrossFit gyms in the past and have dropped in at quite a few gyms when I’ve traveled for work. With that said, the programming at Elevate is consistently challenging and keeps me engaged and motivated.
