Let’s start with the easy stuff…
Name: Kara Musselman
Hometown: Corpus Christi, TX
Profession: I’m a CPA and a Pilates Instructor, but mostly I’m “Mom”
Fitness Background: I played sports as a kid – I love every sport. Weight lifting/training started in high school while playing volleyball, basketball, and softball. I played on countless intramural sports teams in college… You can find me in the Intramural Hall of Fame at UT! LOL, fun times. And there’s more… after I had kids and started staying home with them, I became a Group Ex instructor at the YMCA. I taught everything from Bootcamp to Active Older Adults. Somewhere in there, I got talked into running and found out how fun that can be. 😊 I’ve run three full marathons and “countless” half marathons (maybe 20?) in something like 6 different countries.
Now onto the CrossFit stuff...
When did you first try CrossFit & what made you want to try it? I was first interested in CrossFit around 2015, when I was doing some group training sessions in Singapore once a week along with marathon training. A friend of mine knew a CrossFit coach, so we went to his gym after all the morning classes and did our own session. I remember there being chalkboard walls and chalk everywhere! I also remember rolling out our leg muscles with the bars, but we never used them... ha! Anyway, that’s when I wondered what CrossFit really was. A year later, I was taking outdoor bootcamp classes and the instructor said I really needed to try CrossFit, so I took a Saturday intro session and continued for 6 months or so before moving back to the USA.
What was your first CrossFit workout? My first workout was a partner workout. I can’t remember it exactly, but I know it had a buy in and buy out run together, plus wall balls, pull-ups, and bear crawls across the turf. I had drug my husband along to that intro session and that was the last time he ever did CrossFit!
What made you stick with CrossFit? I stuck with CrossFit because of the people who became my extended family over there in Singapore.
Favorite WOD: I like partner leapfrog WODs
Least favorite WOD: That is a hard question.
Favorite movement: Power clean or squat clean and double unders
Least favorite movement/something that’s hard for you: Hmmm…. that big, heavy D-Ball ground to over the shoulder and, well, muscle ups
What gets you through tough workouts? I think about how accomplished I will feel when it is over. I have a drive to compete with myself to always do better.
What keeps you motivated? My motivation is my family. I don’t like feeling weak or tired… I’m happy when I feel energetic and strong. I want to be able to move and play with my kids. I want to be the one they ask to open the pickle jar. I want to throw them in the pool and the ocean. I want to race them down the mountain. I want to be like my grandma, who was out in the yard swinging a bat and RUNNING to the ‘tree’ bases with my kids when she was 94… she never quit!
Proudest CrossFit moment to date? You know what, for me it’s probably that darn strict pull up. I spent a lot of time working for it, so when it finally happened, it was a happy moment.
Hobbies outside of CrossFit: Um, running my kids around? I think my hobbies are to help my kids practice sports… throwing the baseball with Barrett, pitching softballs to Jordan and Peyton in the park, taking Madison on jogs with me to work on her endurance for swimming. Otherwise, you might find me on my Pilates Reformer. I do some furniture painting and distressing as well, and I make cards, too.
Changes you’ve seen because of CrossFit: Since I started CrossFit Elevate in February, my body has definitely changed. I’ve lost a few pounds and gained some muscle.
How has CrossFit helped you outside of the gym: Each WOD you do in CrossFit is a new challenge. You have to meet that challenge knowing that you did your best. There is always someone who is lifting five more pounds or beating you by one extra rep. The same is true in life outside of CrossFit; there are always challenges and you have to meet them and give it your best. Whatever happens after that is for the best.
How do you balance working out with family life? Oh my… sometimes I have to go at 5am before anyone else is awake in my house… so to them, it’s like it never happened. Ha. Second option: take them with me.
What’s your favorite part of bringing your kid(s) to the gym? I love bringing my kids to the gym because it shows them how to make exercise a part of your life and how good it makes you feel. They get the picture that exercise = fun.
Why CrossFit Elevate? I like CrossFit Elevate because of the location and the people. I enjoy the outdoor feel of the gym. Personally, I have been able to achieve goals that I had, like doing a strict pull up and doing heavier lifting, thus getting stronger. That is a credit to the coaching. The people at Elevate have become quick friends to me and are genuinely happy to encourage and cheer me on.
