Profession: Strategic Sourcing Manager

Fitness Background: I ran track in high school but didn’t start really working out till after I had twins in 2012. I’ve done it all; CrossFit, cycling, half marathons, kickboxing, personal trainer, yoga, Pilates, etc. I actually stopped working out in 2016 after I lost my mom because I would talk to her before every workout/run, so it became too hard. At the end of 2017 I realized my body really suffered from lack of working out, so I recommitted myself to being “fit.”

If you could have one super power, what would it be? Sleep and still have an active and productive life.

Profession: Stay at home mom, with a Masters in Behavioral Psychology (my mom is so proud)

Fitness Background: I’m late to the party. I didn’t really start working out consistently til I was in my late 20’s. Recently, I found myself living in Cairo, Egypt. Both my boys were in school full-time, and I had a lot of time on my hands. So, I started working out regularly, playing tennis, running and taking any aerobic class I could sign up for.

If you could have one super power, what would it be? To be able to speak any language, at any given time, fluently.

Who’s your real life super hero? Hmmm… I’ve pretty much admired Oprah since I was 15.

The CrossFit stuff...

When did you first try CrossFit/what made you want to try it? I started CrossFit in 2016 at CrossFit Elevate. I had been doing traditional weight training since middle school and was finding it hard to stay motivated and work out, so I started looking for a change to my routine.

What was your first CrossFit workout? I don’t remember the specific workout… I do remember wringing the sweat out of my shorts afterwards though

Name: DeLynn Mitchell

Profession: Sr. HR Business Partner

Fitness Background: Um, minimal? I had very little physical fitness interest growing up and didn’t decide to pull it together until after my second child. I realized I had no excuse not to be in better physical health and I wanted to be a role model for my kids. I started with very, very slow running, completed a number of 5ks and a 10k, then got myself a personal trainer and eventually landed in CrossFit.

When did you first try CrossFit and what made you want to try it? February 2014. I’d had a personal trainer for three months solely for the purpose of getting ready for CrossFit because I was so intimidated by it! I wanted to do it to prove to myself that I could.

The CrossFit stuff...

When did you first try CrossFit & what made you want to try it? I was 39 and had spent the past 20 years lifting weights 5-6 times per week and running up to 70 miles per week… and I was fat. My impetus to change was when my family returned from a vacation to Santa Barbara and I saw pictures of myself on the beach. I wanted to try CrossFit to improve my body composition, but I soon found out that improved body composition was just a beneficial side effect.

Name: Kara Musselman

Hometown: Corpus Christi, TX

Profession: I’m a CPA and a Pilates Instructor, but mostly I’m “Mom”

Fitness Background: I played sports as a kid – I love every sport. Weight lifting/training started in high school while playing volleyball, basketball, and softball. I played on countless intramural sports teams in college… You can find me in the Intramural Hall of Fame at UT! LOL, fun times. And there’s more… after I had kids and started staying home with them, I became a Group Ex instructor at the YMCA. I taught everything from Bootcamp to Active Older Adults. Somewhere in there, I got talked into running and found out how fun that can be. 😊 I’ve run three full marathons and “countless” half marathons (maybe 20?) in something like 6 different countries.

When did you first try CrossFit? I tried CrossFit when I lived in Colorado in 2011, but just with my brother-in-law at a traditional CrossFit box. The gym we went to had a “CrossFit” area, but no formal class. Later, when I moved back to Texas, I bought the beginner package from Rogue Fitness.

Fitness Background: Swimming and Pole Vaulting in high school, then bopping around different bootcamps, cycling and BodyPump classes in more recent years. There was a half marathon, multiple 10ks and some triathlons scattered in there.

When did you first try CrossFit & what made you want to try it? After enjoying a few different bootcamps, I decided to bite the bullet and jump on the bandwagon.

What was your first CrossFit workout? There were push-ups, running and bear crawls. It was delightfully painful.

What made you stick with CrossFit? I find it challenging enough that it keeps me coming back and wanting to get better. Like when I suck at handstand...

When did you first try CrossFit? I first tried CrossFit in 2009 when my friend invited me to come try it with her. At that time, I had a membership at Lifetime Fitness, but thought it would be fun to try something different.

What was your first CrossFit workout? I don't remember my exact first workout. All I can remember is feeling intimidated and sick to my stomach walking into class (hence me not remembering my workout). :)

When did you first try CrossFit & what made you want to try it? My wife DeLynn started CrossFit probably 5 months before I gave it a try. She would come home talking about how hard the workouts were and how much she enjoyed it. After watching the CrossFit games with her, and saying numerous times that it didn’t look that hard, I decided to try it out.

What was your first CrossFit workout? Not sure what the workout was, but I am sure that I didn’t make it past the warm up before nearly dying.

Fitness Background: I played basketball and softball growing up and was a competitive gymnast until I was about 12. I was also a cheerleader in middle school, but by the time I got to high school I had pretty much stopped playing all sports. From high school until well into my twenties I pretty much sat on the couch and ate fast food a couple times a day, and basically did anything that would be considered unhealthy. The biggest compliment I get today is that people don’t believe I was ever that unhealthy. If I had to guess, people that I knew back then wouldn’t believe I live the lifestyle I do today. I dabbled in running in my mid-twenties, but didn't do much until I had my second child at 33. After that I started long distance running, and ran one full marathon and several half marathons. For years, I wouldn’t do anything other than running - I didn’t even bother stretching. Eventually, I started adding classes at the gym.

Fitness Background: I participated in sports as a kid and into my teens. Also took up lifting weights in my late teens and in college, but nothing serious. I had hopes of becoming a serious runner a few times, but shin splints nearly crippled me. At best, I was on and off with fitness throughout my adult years. At 40 I learned I had become skinny fat and thought it was “just part of getting older.”

Prior to 2015, a Facebook friend was heavy into CrossFit, posting lots of pictures and videos of the workouts. Fitness Background: I became interested in health and fitness while enlisted in the Navy in 2002. One of my collateral duties while stationed at Naval Medical Center in San Diego, CA was Command Fitness Enhancement, which allowed me to work with individuals staying physically ready for the Department of Defense’s Physical Readiness Tests. This duty made me eligible for a special Tuition Assistance Program, which I used to complete several nationally accredited personal training certifications. I moved to Katy after my enlistment concluded in November 2009 and began working as a Personal Trainer at Lifetime Fitness, Cinco Ranch. My belief in the CrossFit methodology coupled with the skills I gained in the private sector led me to open my own affilate, CrossFit Elevate, in April 2011.
