Name: Angie Altum
Hometown: Copperas Cove, TX
Occupation: Full-time housewife/mommy & part-time CrossFit coach
Fitness Background: I was on the drill team in high school and I exercised here and there, but my real fitness journey didn't start until I discovered CrossFit… so let’s fast forward a couple years, haha!!
Onto CrossFit stuff…
When did you first try CrossFit? I first tried CrossFit in 2009 when my friend invited me to come try it with her. At that time, I had a membership at Lifetime Fitness, but thought it would be fun to try something different.
What was your first CrossFit workout? I don't remember my exact first workout. All I can remember is feeling intimidated and sick to my stomach walking into class (hence me not remembering my workout). :)
What made CrossFit stick over other types of workouts? Shortly after I started CrossFit they started a six-week challenge, so I decided to stick with it and do the challenge. By the end of the six weeks I had lost the rest of my baby weight and had learned about Paleo. I liked the intensity and how the workouts were short, but effective... such a difference from the 45-minute classes I was doing at Lifetime Fitness without really seeing any changes! I was learning CrossFit was on another level and completely different than anything I had tried.
Changes you’ve seen because of CrossFit? It’s been a lifestyle change for me. It's not just how I work out, but also how I live outside of the gym… everything from eating to doing daily activities.
Certifications you hold: Bootcamp & CrossFit Level 1
What made you decide to start coaching? Coaching never entered my mind until another coach asked me if I had thought about it. She planted that seed, and as they say… the rest is history.
What’s your favorite part of coaching? Oh my gosh… where do I start?! The beginning, middle and end. I enjoy everything about coaching. I love being a part of a person's fitness journey. Each person/athlete has a different need, goal, capability, strength, weakness, story. As a coach, I get to learn about that person. Being by someone's side coaching them through the last round, helping someone get their first jump rope, seeing a person’s confidence build because they finished or accomplished that thing that they didn't think they could do... it's about so much more than just the exercise. There is always a life story attached to someone’s fitness/exercise journey. Getting to hear and learn about that is the fun part, and what inspires me. That is what I enjoy about coaching.
How do you encourage people who are interested in trying CrossFit or Bootcamp, but are new to working out or intimidated by the workouts? My experience has been that the word "CrossFit" is intimidating to most. There is already a stereotype, or what people think CrossFit is… which in most cases is not a very good opinion... or there is a lack of knowledge about it. Having done CrossFit and Bootcamp, I think each has their place in one’s fitness routine. For anyone intimidated about trying CrossFit, I think Bootcamp is a great place to start. Let's get you started and once you see what it's about, you'll decide what works for you. Decide, but not doing either one is not an option. 😉
You’ve coached both Bootcamp and CrossFit – from a coaching standpoint, what makes each unique? Both have their own personality and are fun to coach. My biggest priority is always going to make sure each movement is done with proper form to the best of my coaching ability.
Favorite WoD/Least favorite WoD: I don't have favorites 😬
Favorite movement: Squats
Least favorite movement/something that’s especially hard for you: Cleans
What gets you through tough workouts and keeps you motivated? Getting through a tough workout starts with walking into a great gym that has great coaching, great people and, last but not least, a great workout partner (thanks Shady!) that will motivate you til the end... and pick up the last reps of a partner WOD when I am bent over in the "Julie Whitworth" position and can't!
Proudest CrossFit moment: Passing my CF-L1 certification!
If you could tell everyone one thing about CrossFit, what would it be? We had a saying when I first started this craze… "Come drink the Kool-Aid and see for yourself!"
Hobbies outside of CrossFit: Spending time with family and friends. Eating. Traveling.
Why CrossFit Elevate? For me, it starts with the people, no matter what the business may be. CrossFit Elevate was welcoming from day one. I've met wonderful people here and developed great friendships… add in the knowledgeable coaching and great workouts and it's a hit!
